The story told is loosely based on the life of Jeanne du Barry, the protagonist. The illegitimate daughter of a seamstress, despite her humble origins, she manages to climb the rungs of society by coming dangerously close to the royal court. Jeanne is an intelligent, cultured and charming woman who finds a way to break the heart of King Louis XV played by Johnny Depp. Despite being a simple courtesan, Jeanne intrigues the king (who, for his part, was unaware of her social position) so much that he wants her as his official mistress. And that is how she becomes Countess du Barry. What is told in this film is a story of passion, of the desire to live life to the full even while breaking the rules of etiquette. Jeanne moves to Versailles creating havoc and scandal at court, but she is unaware that the king also cultivates a dark side that will endanger her.
